The Chemical and Materials department of laboratories serves a wide range of customers. It tests products for purposes that include testing to obtain the SABS Mark, testing to meet government products regulations, and to determine if the products meet national minimum specifications.

Chemicals and Materials is made up of a group of independent third-party laboratories capable of testing a range of products. The chemical labs are the Industrial and Petroleum laboratory, which tests detergents such as, laundry detergents, disinfectants cleaning products, hand dish washing liquid, multipurpose cleaners, car engine cleaners, toilet hand soaps, bleach, fire extinguisher powders, polymer floor dressing, etc. The Chromatographic services laboratory is another chemical lab and is responsible for the testing of pesticides for registration purposes and the monitoring thereof for efficacy. 
The other laboratories; Rubber and Plastics, Paints and Sealants; Condom Lab and the Textiles and Leather are responsible for testing of a range of products against the requirements of SANS specifications. These products include, plastic pipes, conveyor belts, hoses, paints, male and female condoms, fabric, shoes, plastic and leather bags, etc.
