CALL FOR LIGHTNING PROTECTION EXPERTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SABS TC067 SC06/WG 06 - Protection against lightning - Physical damage to structures and life hazard (SANS 10313) working group


The SABS provides standards to South African communities/industries. One of the objectives of the SABS is to develop, promote and maintain South African National Standards. National Standards are developed by Technical Committees (TC) or Sub-committees (SCs). During the process for development of standards TC/SC would find a need to establish a working group which will be constituted of experts in a certain field.

The latter process has led to SABS TC 067/SC 06 Electricity distribution systems and components: Installation establishing a lighting protection working group to revise SANS 10313. To produce a document that is safe and protects South African environment and broader public, it is important the we INVITE experts in the lighting protection who will offer contribution for the greater good of the nation.

Scope of the working group (WG)

The scope of the WG is to

  1. Introduce lightning protection requirements for PV systems;
  2. Retain SATS 62561-8 for thatched roofs with acceptance of patent rights on the document and impact to South Africa as per procedural standard (National Norm clause 6.22) and inclusion of cautionary notes;
  3. Retain SANS 10225 for now with addition requirements and exclusions to carter for lightning protection mast while the stand-alone document for lightning mast is being developed (project proposal has to be submitted to the SABS);
  4. Retain lightning safety structure procedures with thunder warning systems (IEC 62793) and lightning Safety procedures for reduction of risk outside a structure (IEC TC 62713) and;
  5. Introduce lightning flash ground density for all the provinces and wider matrix of towns

Requirements for WG experts:

To qualify you need to have Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree or equivalent National diploma atleast 10 years experience in the lightining industry and should be registered with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
