NOTICE: CERTIFICATION AND TESTING OF PRODUCTS TO WHICH SANS 151 -FIXED ELECTRICAL STORAGE WATER HEATERS (SANS 151) AND AMENDMENTS TO COMPULSORY SPECIFICATION FOR WATER STORAGE TANKS FOR DOMESTIC USE (VC 9006) ARE APPLICABLE

1. With effect from 12 August 2016, the Minister of Trade and Industry (Minister) declared the amendments of the compulsory specification for hot water storage tanks for domestic use (VC 9006). However, the Minister declared the effective date of clause 3.2 of VC 9006 to be 12 August 2017. Clause 3.2 of VC 9006, which is now in operation, demands that fixed storage water heaters have a minimum energy efficiency rating of class B when tested in accordance with SANS 151.

2. Having regard to the above, and amongst-others (a) the SABS' object to promote quality in connection with commodities and products as stated in section 4( 1 )(b) of the Standards Act, 2008 and (b) the provisions of clause 6 of the General Permit Conditions which provides that "product as certified shall comply with the requirements of the specification as certified, and in addition, shall comply with any legislated requirements [which include the requirements of VC 9006] of such product for sale in South Africa" and "where the product fails to meet the legislated requirements, the permit shall be suspended with immediate effect" -the SABS hereby formally restate the position above and notifies SABS Mark Permit Holders and the geyser industry that its product testing and certification protocol is aligned to the requirements of SANS 151 and VC 9006. In carrying out product tests, the SABS will determine compliance to the minimum energy efficiency rating of class B as stated in clause 3.2 of VC 9006. The outcome thereof will be recorded in the test report.

3. The above will ensure that SABS Mark Permit Holders and the geyser industry are able to satisfy the requirements for approval of their products by the NRCS in order for them to manufacture, import, sell or supply their products as contemplated in VC 9006.
