Certification & Accreditation - Impartiality Committee

In terms of our international accreditation requirements, SABS Commercial has provided for a committee to safeguard the impartiality of our certification activities.

This committee is comprised of representatives of key interests which include, SABS clients, customers of SABS clients, academia, representatives of non governmental organisations including consumer and small business interests.

The roles and responsibilities of the Impartiality Committee include:

  • assisting in developing the policies relating to impartiality of the certification activities of SABS Commercial,
  • counteracting any tendency on the part of SABS Commercial to allow commercial or other considerations to prevent the consistent objective provision of certification activities,
  • advising on matters affecting confidence in certification, including openness and public perception, and
  • conducting a review, as least once annually, of the impartiality of the audit, certification and decision making processes of SABS Commercial.

The Impartiality Committee has access to all the information necessary to enable it to fulfill its functions including a review of the demonstration by SABS Commercial that initially, and on an ongoing basis, commercial, financial or other pressures do not compromise its impartiality.

The Impartiality Committee also has the responsibility that if the top management of SABS Commercial does not respect the advice of the committee, they shall have the right to take independent action (e.g. informing authorities, accreditation bodies, stakeholders).

In taking independent action, the committee shall however respect the legal confidentiality requirements relating to SABS Commercial and its clients.
