Distinguished ladies and gentlemen,

The SABS has the pleasure to invite you to the 24th ARSO General Assembly and associated events that have been scheduled to take place from 18 – 22 June 2018 in Durban, South Africa, under the theme “The Role of Quality Infrastructure and Standardisation in facilitating Trade and Sustainable Development within the African Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA)”; which the host country has shortened to "One Africa-One Market".

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (RSA), is one of the continent’s largest emerging economies. It is the largest country in Southern Africa and the 25th largest country in the world by land area and, with close to 56 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. About 80 percent of South Africans are of Sub-Saharan African ancestry, divided among a variety of ethnic groups speaking different African languages, nine of which have official status. The remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European (white), Asian (Indian), and multiracial (coloured) ancestry.

South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world.

Durban (Zulu: eThekwini, from itheku meaning 'bay / lagoon') is the largest city in the South African province of Kwa-Zulu-Natal. It is also the third largest city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town. It is famous for being home to the busiest port in South Africa. It is one of the major centres of tourism because of the city's warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches. The municipality, which includes neighbouring towns, has a population of almost 11 million, making the combined municipality the biggest city on the east coast

The South African Bureau of Standards is hosting this meeting on behalf of South Africa and will be honoured to welcome you to the country. We hope that ARSO will benefit from various advantages and possibilities, which South Africa has to offer as a well-known location for international meetings and that this will also contribute to the success of the engagements and an enjoyable stay.

We look forward to seeing you in Durban.

Kind regards
The Organising Committee
