The South African Bureau is South Africa's leading National Standards Body (NSB) and was the country's first. It represents SA economic and social interests across the globe through the development of business information solutions for SA organizations of all sizes and Sectors & Services. The SABS works with manufacturing and service industries, businesses, governments and consumers to facilitate the production of standards.

  • The South African Bureau of Standards has 7500 current standards

  • There are approximately  955 standards in development at any one time

  • Best selling standards include: SANS 10142-1:2017 The wiring of premises; SANS 9001:2008  Quality management systems; SANS 10049:2012 Food safety management; SANS 10198-1:2004 The selection, handling and installation of electric power cabling of rating not exceeding 33 kV a.c. and up to and including 3 000 kW installed capacity

  • Standards are priced according to the number of pages, according to the ISO pricing policy. Prices range from R19 to R3000

  • Over 44 324 standards are sold each year

  • The oldest standard developed by the South African Bureau of Standards is SANS 562:1956 Canned hake (Cape cod), while some of  its most recent ones are for contact centres, wind turbines, plastic carrier bags and requirements for responsible tourism
